Mark Carney apologizes to Trump over controversial Reagan ad campaign

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney stated Saturday he has apologized to President Donald Trump over a controversial political advert that quoted former President Ronald Reagan’s 1987 radio speech criticizing commerce obstacles.

The advert, which aired on US tv networks, confirmed clips of Reagan warning that tariffs will result in commerce wars and financial catastrophe.

The advert, which used Reagan’s phrases to criticize Trump’s tariff coverage on Canada, was shortly voted down by the White Home. The White Home accused Canada of taking Reagan’s phrases out of context. In response, Trump halted commerce negotiations with Canada and elevated tariffs on Canadian imports by 10%.

“I’ve apologized to the president,” Carney stated Saturday, chatting with reporters after attending an Asia-Pacific summit in South Korea. Reuters.

Carney stated he made the apology privately to Trump after they each attended a dinner hosted by South Korea’s president on Wednesday.

On Friday, Trump stated Carney was gracious in his apology.

“He was very good. He apologized for what they did within the industrial,” Trump informed Reuters.

Carney stated he mentioned the advert with Ontario Premier Doug Ford earlier than it aired, however was against operating it. Ford commissioned the advert.

“I informed Ford I did not need to undergo with the advert,” Carney stated.

Ford, a conservative, beforehand stated the Oct. 14 marketing campaign advert was meant to “take the phrases of Ronald Reagan and convey them to the American folks” on main U.S. networks. He stated the advert was not nasty and was “very factual.”

The journey to Asia was a part of efforts to cut back Canada’s dependence on the US, Carney stated.
