Jury awards $19.7M to innocent bystanders shot by Denver police officer

Six bystanders injured throughout a 2022 Denver police taking pictures will share almost $20 million in damages after a jury dominated of their favor, their attorneys introduced Friday.
The $19.7 million reward stems from a civil lawsuit filed in opposition to Denver police over the July 17, 2022 taking pictures.
Officer Brandon Ramos beforehand pleaded responsible to assault, was positioned on probation and misplaced his license to function a police officer.
Ramos resigned in February 2024, in response to a Denver Police Division spokesman, who declined to touch upon the decision.

On the time of the taking pictures, Ramos was assigned to a gun violence prevention staff patrolling Denver’s Decrease Downtown neighborhood — house to Coors Subject and an leisure hall — when he and two fellow officers opened hearth on a person, later recognized as Jordan Waddy, after he pulled a gun.
The opposite two officers weren’t charged in reference to the taking pictures. Waddy survived the accidents he sustained within the incident.
A grand jury dominated that Ramos was not in rapid hazard, as Waddy didn’t flip and take a look at him. The jurors concluded that the officer didn’t take into consideration the big crowd behind Waddy.

Lawyer Omeed Azmoudeh stated the award sends “a transparent message about police habits” and that bystanders are “not only a backdrop that you would be able to’t take into consideration.”
