Marines protecting U.S. Embassy in Haiti fire back at suspected gang members

U.S. Marines defending the U.S. Embassy in Haiti exchanged gunfire with suspected gang members final week, a Navy spokesman stated.

Captain Steven J. Keenan instructed Fox Information Digital in an emailed assertion on Sunday that Marines supporting embassy safety operations have been fired upon by suspected gang members within the capital Port-au-Prince and returned fireplace on the night of November 13.

“U.S. Marines are dedicated to the security and safety of U.S. embassies around the globe and reply to all threats with professionalism and speedy, disciplined motion,” Keenan stated.

No troopers have been injured within the incident, which was first reported final weekend The Washington Post.

Neither the State Division nor the U.S. Embassy in Haiti instantly responded to Fox Information Digital’s request for remark.

The Caribbean nation has been stricken by gang violence, with armed teams reportedly controlling as much as 90% of Port-au-Prince, based on the United Nations. The teams block entry roads, assault infrastructure and terrorize civilians via kidnappings, rapes and killings.

There was no elected authorities in Haiti because the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in 2021.

The UN stated a 5,550-strong gang suppression power would start operations in Haiti on October 2, working with Haitian authorities to neutralize gangs, safe infrastructure and help humanitarian entry.

The multinational mission, permitted by the UN Safety Council, goals to “shield susceptible populations from escalating violence and forestall the displacement that inevitably results in it.”

It stays unclear which nations will contribute personnel, though the power will probably be funded primarily via voluntary contributions from UN member states.
