James Watson, DNA double-helix structure co-discoverer, dies at 97

James Watson, who co-discovered the double helix construction of DNA in 1953, has died on the age of 97.

Born in Chicago in 1928, Watson made the groundbreaking discovery at simply 24 years outdated, along with British physicist Francis Crick. Watson died in a hospice after a short sickness, his son confirmed Friday, based on The Related Press.

“As a scientist, his and Francis Crick’s willpower of the construction of DNA, based mostly on information from Rosalind Franklin, Maurice Wilkins and their colleagues at King’s School London, was a pivotal second within the life sciences,” Chilly Spring Harbor Laboratory, Watson’s former analysis establishment, stated in a press release on Friday.

Watson died earlier this week on Lengthy Island, The New York Times reported.

Watson, together with scientists Francis Crick and Maurice Wilkins, received the 1962 Nobel Prize after discovering the double helix construction of DNA, two intertwined strands that resemble a winding ladder, The Related Press reported.
