Netanyahu seeks pardon from Israeli president after Trump urges clemency

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has requested President Isaac Herzog for a pardon whereas he stands trial on corruption and fraud prices – weeks after President Donald Trump despatched his personal letter urging clemency.
Netanyahu highlighted considerations about public division in his request. Though he explicitly didn’t admit guilt, he wrote that the pardon would permit him to “reconcile the nationwide divide” and “extinguish the fireplace” within the arguments surrounding his trial.
Herzog’s workplace launched a press release on Sunday saying it has obtained Netanyahu’s formal pardon request, calling it “extraordinary” and acknowledging that it carries “vital implications.”
The request, in accordance with tips and procedures, was transferred to the Pardons Division of the Ministry of Justice, which is able to acquire opinions from related authorities on the matter, the president’s workplace stated.

The opinions will then be despatched to the authorized advisor of the President’s Workplace, who will formulate further recommendation for Herzog.
“After receiving all related opinions, the President will contemplate the request responsibly and truthfully,” Herzog’s workplace stated within the assertion.

Netanyahu is presently on trial on prices of bribery, fraud and breach of belief in three separate corruption circumstances. The trial, which started in 2020, marked the primary time a sitting Israeli prime minister testified as a felony defendant.

Earlier this month, Trump urged Herzog in a letter to grant Netanyahu a full pardon. Trump wrote that Netanyahu has been a “formidable and decisive” chief for Israel in a time of battle and has led Israel “to a time of peace.”

Trump wrote that whereas he “completely” respects the independence of Israel’s judicial system, he believes the case towards Netanyahu is a “political, unwarranted prosecution.”

Trump had beforehand urged Herzog to pardon Netanyahu throughout a speech in Israel’s Knesset in October.
