Stellantis pauses work on next-gen Jeep Compass at Canadian plant

By Luke Ramseth and Breana Noble, The Detroit News
Stellantis NV said on Thursday that the work paused in his Brampton Assembly Plant in Ontario, because the automaker again evaluates plans for his next generation of electrified Jeep Compass SUV that was planned to start production there early next year.
The car manufacturer said that all work on the future compact crossover, which was re -admitted and comprised other preparations at Brampton, had immediately stopped in force. It was not immediately clear whether temporary dismissals were underway, and the company did not indicate how long the work break would last.
Stellantis is the midst of the reinvection of its strategies and product plans to the compulsory of CEO Carlos Tavares at the end of last year, other leadership shaking and uncertainty about the efforts of President Donald Trump to stop EV policy support and perform rates from Canada and Mexico.
“While we navigate today’s dynamic environment, Stellantis continues to review his product strategy in Noord -America to ensure that it offers customers a series of vehicles with flexible powertrain options to meet their needs,” said a statement from spokesperson for spokesperson for The Jodi Tinson company, which added that the break “does not change our previously announced investment plans for Brampton.” Automotive News reported for the first time about the work stop.
The product plans of other car manufacturers also seem to be in Flux, including Ford Motor Co., which has delayed the launch of the next generation of gas and hybrid F-150 pickups, according to Autoforecast Solutions, which follows vehicle production and launches. It had set the vehicle to start production in calendar year 2027, but moved to 2028.
At Stellantis, Brampon previously built the Dodge Charger and Challenger, as well as the Chrysler 300, before the plant production ended at the end of 2023 and employees were fired. Since then, the automaker has returned the facility again in preparation for the new compass. Stellantis in 2022 announced $ 2.8 billion in investments to revise both his Brampton and Windsor -Assemblage factories and to expand a research center, upgrades that the company described as an important part of his electrification push.
The current generation of the compass debuted in 2016 and has seen various updates over the years, and it is currently the most affordable vehicle in the United States since the Renegade departure.
The compass of the next generation will be built on the STLA-Middel-Groote Platform that can accommodate both electrified and gas-driven powertrains. The Automaker previously promised that the new compass “will offer different multi-energy propulsion systems.” A European version of the SUV built in Melfi, Italy, is planned to debut later this year with North -American and other global availability in 2026, but that timeline can now go back.
At Ford, spokesperson Mike Levine meanwhile refused to discuss the F-150 delay, for the first time reported by Crain’s Detroit Business: “We do not comment on speculation about future product.”
The pick -up is delayed because a number of internal combustion engine product lives are extensively as car manufacturers are reduced for a year or more launches of electric vehicles, said Sam Fiorani, vice -president of the global vehicle forecast of Autoforecast. He refused to specify other models that have been delayed.
“They have to keep ice on the market,” he said. “The high volume EVs see their figures are dropped.”
The sale of EV has not kept the expectations because customers remain on their care for their prices, reach, loading speeds and reliability of an electric grid. In 2027, Ford will launch an electric F-series truck from the next generation in the new Blueoval City Assembly factory in Tennessee. Autoforecast predicts lower volumes from the plant from 70,000 to 75,000 vehicles every year.
As a result of these trends, Fiorani said that car manufacturers should invest in their ice cream vehicles and possibly need more time to increase the engineering of models of the next generation.
