U.S. Marine declared dead after days-long search in the Caribbean

A U.S. Marine who reportedly fell overboard and have become misplaced at sea throughout operations within the Caribbean has been pronounced useless after a failed search, officers stated Thursday.

Lance Cpl. Chukwuemeka E. Oforah, 21, of Florida, was pronounced useless Tuesday, three days after he fell overboard from the USS Iwo Jima, the Marine Corps stated. He was pronounced useless after a 72-hour search and rescue operation.

“All of us mourn along with the Oforah household,” stated Col. Tom Trimble, commander of the twenty second Marine Expeditionary Unit. “The lack of Lance Cpl. Oforah is deeply felt by your complete Navy Marine Corps workforce. He will likely be deeply missed, and his devoted service won’t be forgotten.”

The assertion adopted a 72-hour search involving 5 U.S. Navy ships, a rigid-hulled inflatable boat and 10 Navy, Marine Corps and Air Power plane.

Oforah was an infantry rifleman. He enlisted within the Marine Corps in October 2023 and graduated from Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island in February 2024.

He accomplished the USMC’s Faculty of Infantry at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, and was assigned to the third Battalion, sixth Marine Regiment.

On the time of his loss of life, he was deployed to Battalion Touchdown Group 3/6, twenty second MEU aboard the USS Iwo Jima.
